AFTER THE WAR - ERITREA
We made a detour to Eritrea before continuing south. Asmara, the capital, came as a total surprise.
The Fiat Unos, the espressos, the gelati or ice cream and the fact that most Eritreans speak Italian are all reminders of the Italian colonisation. Quite unsettling I must say. After 30 years of war for independence against Ethiopia, Eritrea's dream was to rebuild the country. "Sister, how do you like my country?" was a question often heard. Or people would interrupt a wedding and invite us to celebrate with them. It was a great honour to be hand fed by the chief of the village who picked the very best pieces of meat for me.
We organised our first IT seminar at the university of Asmara. Everybody, even the government, was really keen to be part of our project. Paul would do the local internet surveys and training, whereas I organised the seminars and media coverage. All this, in just 2 days, and than we would again disappear into the bush.
